Chapter Fourteen

When I woke up, Mason was already out of bed, fully showered, and buttoning up his shirt.

“It might be best if we went to our separate rooms,” he said.

“Got it,” I said. I grabbed my pajamas from the floor and pulled them on underneath the covers, feeling embarrassed to be naked in front of Mason now in the light of day. The moment was over. Whatever had allowed last night to happen was gone.

I said an awkward and overly formal “goodbye” and left the room.

After getting showered and dressed myself, I checked my phone. Mason had already sent over a dozen tasks for me. I also had seemingly thousands of emails to reply to. I guess it was going to be a normal work day.

I got Mason his coffee and breakfast.

“Thank you,” he said curtly, before telling me to close my door on the way out.

Everything was truly back to normal. It was like the previous night hadn’t happened at all.

I knew Mason’s sudden coldness was probably the right approach. After all, not only was he my boss, we also were very clearly not compatible. But I felt hurt nonetheless. Why couldn’t it have lasted longer? Was his desire for me suddenly gone?

I decided to be just as cold, and I worked to be as efficient and effective at work as possible.

At 3 pm, Mason called me into his office.

“My father called,” he said. “Apparently whatever you said to Grace worked. She believed you. Good job. She believes we’re in love, and she told my father. I’ll very likely be taking over the company, if all continues to go well”

“Good for you,” I said.

“I’m just letting you know that you did a great job with the role,” said Mason.

“Thank you. Does that mean I no longer have to pretend to have feelings or be attracted to you.”

Mason nodded. “Probably just a little while longer. I have to get back to work now,” he said. “We’ll be returning to New York tomorrow morning.”

When I finished work, even though I had to get up early, I wandered around for a while taking pictures. I have to get myself sorted out, I thought. I wasn’t sure if it was the job, or being in LA, or Mason himself… but something was confusing me. I was messing up my own perfectly planned life.

When I returned to the suite, I didn’t even see Mason. It was large enough that it was possible for us to easily avoid each other.

In the morning, on the plane, I read while Mason worked on his laptop. We hardly said a word to each other. When we arrived, we had to walk to the parking area where I had parked our BMW. I felt a little bittersweet returning to New York.

“Am I driving you home?” I asked.

“Yes,” said Mason. “Where else?”

“I wasn’t sure if maybe you wanted to go shopping for New York clothes, now that you’re in a new city.”

Mason smiled tightly to acknowledge my joke.

After a few minutes in the car, he finally broke the ice.
